Root Canal Therapy in New Castle, DE

What Is Considered a Root Canal?

Your teeth contain a soft, inner pulp. If that inner pulp gets infected, harmed, or exposed because of tooth decay, you can suffer severe pain and a loss of natural tooth function. The only way to remove the tooth’s damaged pulp and relieve your throbbing pain is with a dental procedure called a root canal.

How Do You Know When You Need a Dental Root Canal?

When a tooth’s inner pulp has suffered a significant infection or damage, it must be repaired by a root canal dentist to have a chance of saving the tooth. You may need dental root canal treatment if you experience any of these problems:

  • Ongoing moderate to serious tooth pain
  • Twinges of tooth pain when you bite
  • Sharp tooth pain that keeps you awake at night
  • Swollen gums near the painful tooth
  • Severe tooth decay or tooth discoloration
  • Extreme tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures or touch

What Types of Dentists Perform Root Canal in New Castle?

The procedure is typically performed by a general dentist or dental specialist known as an endodontist. You will need to consult an endodontist for a root canal in New Castle if your dental problem is complex or certain teeth need to be re-treated. To find a skilled root canal dentist near you, simply call our practice so we can schedule your appointment with one of our experienced dental providers.

What Is Involved in the Root Canal Procedure?

The standard root canal procedure is rather simple and typically takes under two hours. It is quickly and painlessly performed in the following way:

  1. Your dentist will numb the affected tooth to ensure that the procedure is painless.
  2. A tiny shield will be used to isolate the tooth from the others and make sure that the area stays completely clean.
  3. An opening will be made into the tooth’s crown for easy access to its inner pulp.
  4. The dentist will remove the pulp, and then clean and shape the inner canals with special dental tools.
  5. A disinfecting fluid will be put into the canals to get rid of any remaining debris.
  6. The canals will be filled with a special substance known as gutta-percha, and securely sealed.
  7. A root canal crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it from being fractured.

What Will a Root Canal Cost?

The cost of a root canal is based on how badly your tooth is damaged, how many roots are in the tooth, and the treatment needed to repair the problem. Another factor affecting the cost is whether the problem can be resolved by a general dentist or requires an endodontist. A final factor is whether your dental insurance will cover any of your treatment costs. We can provide you with an estimate of the cost of your treatment during a consultation with one of knowledgeable dentists. Please call our office today to schedule an appointment for a dental evaluation.

Does a Root Canal Hurt?

No, a root canal does not hurt. Although the procedure has an unfortunate reputation for being painful, you actually won’t feel any pain because you will be  given a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. To repeat: a root canal does not cause pain. Instead, it eliminates the pain you’re suffering because of the damaged or decayed tooth.

If you’re suffering from tooth pain, call our office right away so we can evaluate the problem and provide the relief you need.
